You can explore the map without signing in. An account with a confirmed email is needed to review stretches, copy logbook stays to your account and use boat services.
Getting started
Open the Cut Along map and search for a waterway or place. Use the category buttons to show water, Elsan, rubbish, fuel, mapped moorings or locks. The Places view gives you a searchable list of the same records.
On a phone, the main sections sit along the bottom of the website. On a larger screen, they are in the side menu. Your boat details, saved places and local logbook belong to the browser or device where you entered them.
Map and places
Finding a waterway or facility
Search by name, choose a category, then select a marker or list entry for its details. Find me centres the map on your current position if your device and browser allow location access. You can always move the map yourself.
Use Save place on a place card to keep it in this browser. Saving a place does not confirm that it is open, accessible or suitable for your boat. Each record links to its OpenStreetMap source where available.
Stretches and reviews
Switch on Stretches above the map and zoom in to see approximate mile long sections. Select one to read reviews. A Cut Along stretch number is a reference within this site, not an official milepost or a designated mooring.
Map data can be wrong. A missing marker does not mean a facility does not exist. A marker does not prove that a facility is working or accessible. Check with the operator or on site before relying on it.
Journeys and notices
In Plan a journey, choose a start and destination. Boat routes use connected mapped navigation lines and show an estimated water distance, nearby locks and travel time. You can adjust boat speed and time allowed at locks. The estimate does not check closures, opening hours, currents, dimensions, licences or safe access to the destination.
Walking and cycling directions open in Google Maps. They are separate from the boat route. Check local signs and access rights when travelling ashore.
Cut Along does not have a live notice feed. Check current Canal & River Trust notices and any other relevant navigation authority before setting off.
Cruising log
In Logbook, add where and when you arrived, an optional private note and, if you choose, a boat position. You can correct a stay, record departure, remove it or export your browser log as a file.
Web logbook entries stay in the browser where you made them. If you have confirmed your email, open Your log on other devices and choose Check cloud log. You can then copy stays missing from your account or bring missing account stays into this browser. This is a manual copy, not continuous synchronisation. An edit or deletion on one device does not automatically update other copies.
Before clearing browser data or changing devices: export your log and check whether the stays you need have been copied to your account. A cloud copy can include your private note and saved boat position.
Account and reviews
Open Account settings to create an account, sign in, reset your password, change your username or request an email change. After registering, open the confirmation link in your email, return to the site and choose I have confirmed my email. Check your junk folder if the message has not appeared, or use Send another verification email.
A confirmed account can publish a stretch review with a rating and up to two photos. You can edit or delete your own review from that stretch. Reviews and photos are public, so avoid sharing another person's face, boat name or exact mooring without permission. Use Report on a review to flag a concern for moderation.
Signing out does not remove your local logbook or a review you have published. See the privacy policy for details about local data, cloud copies and public contributions.
Boat services
Services lets confirmed account holders look for boat tradespeople, post a work request, offer a service and exchange private messages. Search by your location or a named waterway. Providers choose an approximate base area and travel distance.
Use My activity to find your conversations, edit or pause a service profile, and close a work request. A provider can issue a short lived, single use review code after helping someone. The code allows that boater to leave a rating; it does not verify that work was completed.
Agree the details directly. Cut Along has not verified providers, qualifications, insurance, prices or availability. There are no payments or dispute services on the site. For urgent safety issues, contact emergency services or the navigation authority directly.
Troubleshooting
The map background is blank. What can I do?
Check your connection and reload the page. Some waterway lines and place records may remain available after a previous visit, but background map tiles need a connection and may not load offline.
Find me cannot locate me. What should I check?
Allow location access in your browser and device settings, then try again somewhere with a clearer signal. You can move the map manually if location is unavailable.
I cannot post a review or use services. Why?
Sign in and confirm your email address. Return to Account settings and refresh your account details after opening the confirmation link.
My log is missing on another device. Where is it?
Log entries are stored locally until you manually copy them to your account. On the original device, open Logbook, check the cloud log and copy missing stays to the account. On the new device, sign in, check the cloud log and bring missing stays onto that device.
A place, route or listing looks wrong. What should I do?
Do not rely on it for travel or paid work. Check with the relevant authority or provider. Use the contact guidance below to report the page, place name and what needs correcting. For a stretch review, use its Report button.
Get in touch
Email cutalong@insanerabbit.com for help with the website, your account, a listing or a map correction.
Please include the page or feature, what you expected, what happened, and the device and browser you used. For a map correction, add the waterway or place name. Screenshots help, but remove private details before sharing them.
For an immediate risk on the water, contact the relevant navigation authority or emergency services. Email is not an emergency channel.
