Find the authority
Canal & River Trust, the Environment Agency, Scottish Canals and other bodies manage different navigations. A licence for one network does not automatically cover another. Identify every authority on your route before departure.
Check the supporting documents
Insurance and a valid Boat Safety Scheme certificate may be required, with exemptions depending on the craft and authority. Gather the registration and boat measurements before starting an application.
Price the actual boat
Licence cost can depend on length, beam, duration and mooring status. Use the current calculator from the relevant authority rather than an old forum figure or another boater's bill.
