01

Work backwards from the deadline

List locks, tunnels, bridges and any booking requirements on each leg. Put the hardest section early enough that a delay will not threaten the return date.

02

Allow for non-cruising time

Water stops, shopping, weather and a day you simply want to stay put all count. Build these into the plan before choosing a longer ring.

03

Keep an escape option

Check where the ring can be shortened, or where you could safely turn and retrace your route. Review notices daily; a closure can change the sensible direction of travel.

Before you go

  • Schedule the hardest section early
  • Include non-cruising time
  • Keep a shorter alternative
