Locks, lift bridges, tunnels, water stops and busy junctions all add time. Look at the route as a sequence of tasks, not a distance divided by maximum speed.
Check what changed
Read live notices and local operating times on the morning you travel. Water levels, closures and restrictions can change after a printed guide was published.
Keep a second stopping place
Mark one earlier mooring and one later option. If you reach the first while everyone is fresh, continue; if the day has been slow, stop without turning the last hour into a rush.
