Start with the route
Check length, beam, air draught and draught against every lock, bridge and shallow section on the intended network. An attractive boat is no bargain if it cannot reach your home mooring.
Think about daily life
Walk through the cabin as though you were carrying shopping, getting dressed or making breakfast. Berths, storage, heating and access to the stern matter more after a wet week than they do during a viewing.
Budget beyond the asking price
Add mooring, licence, insurance, fuel, servicing and a reserve for repairs. Get an independent survey when buying a used boat, and make any offer subject to the checks you need.
