See the boat in the water
Look for leaks, damp, unusual engine smoke, poor starting and signs that systems have been patched rather than repaired. Ask to see the engine run from cold and take the boat out if the seller agrees.
Commission your own survey
An independent survey can examine hull condition, fit-out and major systems. Check exactly what the survey includes and whether the boat must be lifted out. A recent survey commissioned by someone else is useful history, not a substitute for your own advice.
Trace the documents
Ask for evidence of ownership, the Boat Safety Scheme certificate where required, servicing, insurance and any transferable mooring arrangement. Check who controls the mooring before assuming it comes with the boat.
