A narrowboat can use more of the connected canal network. A wide beam offers more living space, but its routes can be separated by narrow structures. Make a list of the places you genuinely expect to cruise.
Price a real mooring
Ask marinas and mooring operators about availability for the precise dimensions, access and facilities. The extra width can affect licence and mooring costs.
Try both afloat
Steer each type in wind, through bridges and into a berth with a competent instructor or owner. A floor plan will not show how the boat handles or where its wider profile becomes awkward.
