Raise the alarm
Tell the helm immediately, point continuously at the person and call for help. Throw a lifebuoy or other suitable aid if it can be done safely.
Keep clear of the propeller
Stop propulsion as appropriate and approach with care. A person in cold water may struggle to help themselves, so plan a safe recovery without putting another crew member in danger.
Get help afterwards
Call emergency services when needed, especially after cold-water immersion, injury or inhaled water. Change wet clothes and keep the person warm while waiting for advice.
Before you go
- Keep the person in sight
- Keep clear of the propeller
- Call for help when needed
