Assess the river first
Check levels, stream warnings, weather and the authority's navigation advice. Identify weirs and where you can safely stop before leaving a sheltered canal.
Prepare the boat and crew
Secure loose gear, check engine reliability and fuel, and wear suitable lifejackets. Make sure the crew knows what to do if the engine stops or someone goes overboard.
Give yourself more space
Current changes stopping distance and the way the boat turns. Approach locks, bridges and moorings with an option to abort. If conditions exceed the boat or crew's ability, wait.
