Confirm there is room
Check the winding hole on a current map, then assess it from the boat. A long boat may need the full available width and depth. Do not assume a side arm is a public turning place.
Use the conditions
Approach slowly with the wind and flow in mind. Leave room to bring the bow round without striking moored craft or bank fittings. A crew member can observe clearances from a safe position.
Reset before moving on
Once aligned, pause to check both directions and any trailing ropes or fenders. If the attempt is not working, stop, regain control and try again rather than adding power blindly.
