Measure the actual boat
Record beam, length, draught and air draught with roof gear in its travelling position. Published waterway dimensions can be close to the limit and water levels change.
Check every connecting section
A broad canal may connect through a narrow lock, bridge or shallow pound. Confirm the whole route with the relevant authority and current navigation advice, not just the main canal name.
Plan passing and mooring
Allow for restricted passing places and fewer suitable berths. Slow down early near moored boats and check whether a planned turning point gives enough room.
