Check the channel
Make sure there is enough room for passing craft, particularly on bends and near bridges. A berth that suits a narrowboat may leave too little navigable water with a wide beam alongside.
Use suitable fixings
Confirm the rings, bollards or permitted pins and allow for wind on the larger side of the boat. Check that boarding remains safe at the expected water level.
Respect access
Keep lock approaches, service points, towpaths and turning places clear. Read local signs for stay limits and any width-specific restrictions.
