Prepare before entering
Read local signs, set a clear role for the helm and lock crew, and keep children and pets away from the chamber edge. Check the water level and that gates and paddles are ready for your direction of travel.
Watch the boat throughout
Keep the boat away from cills and gates. The helm should stay alert as water rises or falls, with ropes used only as the lock and boat require. Open paddles gradually if the water moves the boat sharply.
Leave it ready as instructed
Close paddles and gates in line with local instructions, and check that no boat is approaching before resetting anything. Ask another crew before helping with their lock; they may be handling a different situation.
