Set the boat safely
Approach slowly and choose a secure place to leave the boat while you inspect the lock. Keep a windlass and suitable lines accessible, but avoid loose rope where it can reach the propeller.
Work one task at a time
Move between boat and lock using the safe access provided. Do not leap across a gap or leave the boat in a position where a changing water level can trap it.
Know when to wait
A difficult crosswind, strong flow, deep lock or unfamiliar mechanism is a good reason to pause and ask for local help. Let waiting boats pass if that gives you space to work calmly.
