Confirm usable dimensions
Check the authority's current published limits, any restrictions and the boat's measured width including fixed projections. Depth and length matter too.
Line up early
Use a slow, controlled approach and position the boat before the mouth of the lock. Keep crew clear of pinch points and watch how the hull sits against walls as levels change.
Leave room for others
Where a lock is shared, agree the approach with the other helm. If fit or procedure is uncertain, stop before entering and ask the lock keeper or authority.
